Today's Solin is an important cultural centre and archaeological site, situated at the mouth of the river Jadro which, thanks to its particular plants and variety of fauna connects life along the river to the sea. This village started to develop in the 4th century B.C. as a Greek - Illyrian settlement. From the old scripts we learn that contemporary Salona was a port of the Illyrian Vršina tribe Delmati, who traded with the Greek seafarers. It was both a fortress and a port to Delmati while later, in the 1st century B.C., Salona was conquered by the Romans. History tells us that the Roman emperor Diocletian was born in Salona or in the surrounding area and that he built his palace nearby. Manastirine are one of the biggest Old Christian cemeteries and also where St. Dujam, the Solin bishop, martyr, the patron saint of the town of Split is buried.
