The winegrowers region of Zagora is located in the Adriatic hinterland that is divided from the sea by the Mosor and Biokovo mountains. Grape vines grow on the slopes of Mount Biokovo in dolines (dolac) and in the funnel shaped holes in the limestone formation (vrtača) binding up around the rocks and forming picturesque vineyards. Going down the slopes of Mount Biokovo, the karstic area and stone replace the green Imotski fields, where most vineyard plantations are found. Here production of the kujunđuša dominates, a wine variety of unknown origin, that is widespread in Imotski vineyards, and is presumed to be an autochthonousvariety of the region. The wine obtained from this grape variety is harmonious and its bouquet has elements of continental and southern wines. The new zest in the viticulture of this region is given by the vineyards around Prološac with new plantations of autochthonous and European grape varieties. You can arrive in the Vrgorac field known as Jezero (Lake), once partly covered by water through the hilly vineyards. Still today, when rainfall is particularly abundant, the field tends to flood and for this reason the grapes are harvested by boat.
The vineyard is famous for the large number of vines planted on this fertile soil, whilst the attractive vineyards of the Vrgorac winery called Vrgorka achieve excellent results both with their autochthonous varieties and with the adapted new vine grape varieties. A significant contribution is obtained by the production of vines giving enthusiasm to viticulture development.
