An active holiday in Central Dalmatia also includes horse riding. There are mews and equestrian clubs in Sinj, Split and Trilj who organize riding schools for beginners, and offer professionals the possibility of recreational horse riding.
Horse breeding has a 300-year old tradition in Cetina border-land and is very much involved in a unique equestrian tournament called Sinjska alka that has been taking place in Sinj since1715 in remembrance of a heroic victory over the Ottoman army. The honourable knight’s contest consists of contestants (called alkar) being dressed in their centennial vestments, on horseback who gallop along trying to hit a central ring – the alka. This tournament is treated as a moving cultural monument, and the alkari prepare themselves all through the year for the show which takes place in August in front of about ten thousand spectators. As well as Alka, there are a number of horse races and hurdles competitions in Sinj and Trilj .
